American Legion Post 62 Auxiliary holds competition, offers female veteran art classes

Peoria Times - 5/12/2018

Annually, the Department of Arizona, together with the Arizona VA, sponsors an art competition for veterans. Competing in more than 150 categories, veterans take the opportunity to develop a craft-- while others find therapy in the work. Unit 62 makes a monetary donation every year to support this program.

Unit 62, in collaboration with two women veterans, is developing an art program for women veterans called "Heal Her Art." Unit 62 is providing the funding-with the support of the National American Legion Auxiliary Foundation and Chick-fil-A.

Joan Sisco, Auxiliary member and CEO of Veterans First, is providing consultative resources, event management and registration. Dana Ramsey, Unit 62 member, Army veteran and owner of "Drink Creatively," will conduct the art sessions. Similar to "Paint Nite" sessions, women veterans will each paint their own version of a specially created therapeutic image - at no cost. Sessions are expected to begin in June.

For 70 years, the Arizona American Legion has helped high school students learn about the U.S.Constitution while developing public speaking skills through its National Oratorical program. To support the American Legion, Unit 62 provided judging at the district level along with public relations support at the district and state level.
