Corvallis veteran, family, get year's worth of groceries

Albany Democrat-Herald - 8/14/2017

Timothy Taylor of Corvallis thought he was getting a shopping spree at the Albany WinCo Foods last week.

But the Army National Guard veteran and his family were surprised when they were told they would receive free groceries for a year, worth more than $10,000.

"Words cannot express how grateful we are for this gift," Taylor said, in a news release. "With three kids, someone is always hungry in our house, so this gift of groceries will help relieve a lot of stress for our family."

The year's worth of groceries came through a partnership by WinCo Foods, Operation Homefront and Eckrich, a maker of smoked sausage and deli meats.

Taylor served for seven years as a combat engineer during Operation Enduring Freedom, earning several medals and ribbons, including a Purple Heart and an Afghanistan Campaign Medal.

He and his wife Angelena have been married for nine years. She is a member of Operation Homefront's Hearts of Valor Program, a network of more than 3,000 caregivers of wounded service members.

The grocery surprise is part of an ongoing campaign by Eckrich to honor, thank and support military families through Operation Homefront. Eckrich has donated more than $2.5 million since 2012 through the campaign.

Operation Homefront is a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to build strong, stable and secure military families so that they can thrive in the communities they worked to protect.
