Joseph Kochanowsky

Joseph Kochanowsky, 92, of Newington, widower of Ann (Massa) Kochanowsky, fell asleep in the Lord Friday (June 16, 2017) at his home. Born in New Britain, son of the late Andrew and Catherine (Barniak) Kochanowsky, he was a former Hartford resident for 17 years until moving to Newington in 1980. Joseph was a graduate of New Britain High School and was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran serving in the SeaBees in the Aleutian Islands off the coast of Alaska. He was employed at Pratt & Whitney United Aircraft for 37 years until his retirement in 1989 and always took great pride in his teams' contribution in building some of the mechanical parts for the space ships launched by NASA.

Joseph was a profoundly fair and just man of few words. A faithful Christian, he never missed a liturgy regardless of the weather. Despite his progressive physical limitations, even to his last night and to everyone's amazement, he never failed to kneel at his bedside to pray.

Joseph had many joys. He loved dancing with his beloved wife Ann their special version of Swing Dance. He treasured his friends Angela and Eddy. He adored the game of golf and shared that joy with his nephew and subsequently with his great-nephews who later chose to spend their summers caddying at the Trump Golf Course in New York. He got great pleasure in giving his nieces and nephews lovely Christmas gifts and was always there for them; whether they needed a shuttle to the airport or a ride to or from college. But nothing meant more to him than his brothers and sisters - particularly his brother Lester, whom he loved greatly and lost at a very early age.

Surviving is a beloved brother, John of New Britain; several nieces and nephews; and many grand nieces and nephews. Besides his wife Ann, he was predeceased by two brothers, Lester and Andrew Kochanowsky; and five sisters, Mary Kerelejza, Anne Belonick, Alice Andrusia, Helen Kochanowski and Elizabeth Fenton.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 54 Winter Street, New Britain, CT 06051. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery. Calling hours are Wednesday morning from 9 to 10 a.m. at the church. The Carlson Funeral Home, New Britain is assisting with arrangements.
