Officials to discuss mental health concerns

Union-Recorder - 9/28/2018

Sept. 26--It's grown to epidemic proportions across America and now a group of local officials plan to meet Thursday night to discuss the problem and what they think should be done going forward.

The problem is mental health and addiction, both regarded as chronic health conditions whose physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual elements cost society billions annually.

It is reported that more than 22 million Americans and their families have yet to receive the continuing and holistic care they need in order to recover and make the attempt to become productive members of society, health experts say.

Those same health officials contend there is hope.

They base it on factual numbers to prove it.

In observance of Mental Health and Addiction Awareness Day 2018, Thursday night, a special program will be held in the Health Science Building, Room H-107A at Central Georgia Technical College in Milledgeville to enlighten the community further on the following topics:

* Mental health first aid.

* Establishing a shared definition of serious mental illness.

* Gathering accurate data with serious mental illness.

* Developing and implementing a system-level data-driven plan.

A special meet and greet session will be held from 5:10 p.m. until 5:30 p.m.

From 5:30 p.m. until 5:45 p.m., welcome and various occasions will get underway prior to dinner being served from 6 p.m. until 6:30 p.m.

Guest speakers for the occasion will begin their talks beginning at 6:30 p.m. and going until 7:15 p.m.

And for the last 15 minutes, officials and other special guests will wrap-up the evening with where do we go from here.

Several local officials have been invited to speak at the event. They include:

* Baldwin County Commissioner Henry Craig.

* Baldwin County Commissioner Emily C. Davis.

* Dr. Noris Price, school superintendent of the Baldwin County School District.

* Todd Dixon, chief executive officer of Navicent Health Baldwin hospital in Milledgeville.

* Dr. Mary Boenber, LCSW clinical director.

There also will be the establishment of a special coalition committee.

Also taking part in the event are Tyrone Evans and Crystal Whidby from the Oconee Center in Milledgeville.
